His papa introduced him to one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to discover whatever he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his parents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not let the negative feedback from other people kill his ambition of being one of the best poker competitors on the planet.

Phil started competing intently after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a learning period and winning wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he destroyed a number of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and an eternal love for poker. Phil says that he is learning every day and is quite humble about his accomplishments. He admits to making blunders in each game of poker and constantly strives to get better.

Despite the fact that Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a normal basis.
